Scanpan - Cooking is a great bonding activity with your children. Instead of having the video game consoles or TV programs babysit them at home all the time, why not actually spending time with them, by engaging in a common household activity such as cooking. Cooking is a great opportunity to teach your kids about geography and culture (“where did those spices come from?”), chemistry and nutrition (“A cup of flour contains how many calories?”), mathematics (“An ounce of butter is how much in milligrams?”), and other topics which include science, reading, physics and art.

Cooking opens to them a world that goes beyond the kitchen walls. Cooking is a great confidence booster. It allows the child or teen to be independent, and to make decisions on his own. The mere act of measuring ingredients in a measuring cup, or tasting the mixture to see if its savory enough or handling the knife with skill while chopping off onions teaches the child to be accountable for his own actions. With proper supervision and guidance, children can have a great fun and might discover hidden talents in cooking.

There are some tips to get the most out of your cooking and bonding experience with your children. One is to Let them do the work. Demonstrate to them and show them how to fry or operate an egg beater. Let them try for themselves, while guiding through the process. Once they get the hang of it, allow them to work on their own. Ask them if they are comfortable in doing the task or not. If they mess up, don’t be too hard on them. Laugh at the mistakes, but teach them how to correct or fix them. Keeping these things in mind might just make them want to volunteer more in cooking and baking duties, rather than be bystanders. - Scanpan CTX
